You ARE joking? You have clearly never tried American Cheddar Cheese. Their 'extra sharp' is roughly similar to our mild - pickled onions? When I mentioned those to someone (along with pickled eggs) the response was, "What?" [Let Me Think]

Hello Brumlad,
I was inspired to make my own pork pies recently when I watched a TV program called "Kirstie's Handmade Britain".
Needless to say the urge wasn't strong enough and I'm not all that keen on pork pies anyway.

Your need may give you the impetus to give it a go, after all they are made by ordinary people so it is something we can all do if we really want to.
Here are some links to recipes on the web that look easy to make. Don't be put off by the ridiculous French measurement system that we have shoved down our throats now, there are imperial and US equivalents available on the web.

Ahh, Astoness, now if that was Hook Norton...
You can't get Hookie over here because it's not pasteurised! I did try to bring in a bottle of it once. Got to the Customs desk and told the officer to keep his eyes still while I moved the bottle in front of him. When he asked what (I was doing I said that it was now 'passed your eyes' so should be safe. He didn't buy it for some reason! [Let Me Think]

Cheddar is one of those things that is just not the same over here. They sell something called 'New York Extra Sharp Cheddar', which tastes like something between 'Mild' and 'Sharp'. Pickled onions? No, although they do sell pickled gherkins, which are usually sold with beefburgers.

It's quite strange how it is the 'little things' and NOT the 'big things' that make you feel nostalgic.

We had those disgusting "pickles" at Sea World once. The taste and smell was with me for days.
Odd, because I always liked pickled gherkins at home but those foul things put me off for life, along with sea world and the brewery they were pushing.

Brumlad
I know it is your adopted country, but it is my true opinion that any country which produces a firm (Kraft) which is proud of inventing processed cheese to "enhance" the revolting excrecences of Macdonalds has dubious culinary tastes

Hi MikeJee, I agree with you in fact about 'Kraft' (and haven't they bought cadbury's now?). There IS some good food over here, but there's also a lot of 'fast, processed, food'.

Hi Brumlad
Yes they have unfortunately bought Cadburys. It is very fortunate that I had retired from Cadburys by then , as my coments would not have been well received
