Lyn

What you have to realise is that I have collected well in excess of 20,000 photos and I only ever posted 2600 to the BHF and a lot less to the BF so there have to be many you have never seen. I have never run this thread on the BHF either.

As we walk down Dale End we pass by on the left

Masshouse Lane that runs down to Duddeston Row
Henns Walk that runs down to Moor St

And on the right

Newton Street
Dalton Place
Lower Priory.

If you look back through some of these photos, you can see just how many wonderful buildings that Birmingham has got rid of over the years. Some of them really did need demolishing as they were in such a dangerous and dilapidated condition, but lots could have been saved. trouble was they didn't fit in with the modern ideas of shopping and the roads were too narrow.

How did other towns cope with this, they did what Birmingham did too late, they pedestrianised the areas. Look at towns like Stratford upon Avon where they kept the frontages of buildings and built new interiors. Was that too hard for Birmingham, no because it was done in certain places. Where Birmingham went wrong was not making a pre-requisite of any planning application that affected the town centre.

Thats it rant over for today.

totally agree with both of you. I watched a TV program about Bath, after London they get the most visitors, they've really looked after their old buildings, a lovely place to visit. All we've got are glass buildings and shops.
