Lynne
You must be talking of this building at the junction of Bull St and Corporation St. I think it housed Dunne's the Hatters on the ground floor. Lots of buildings had spires in those days and quite a few of them down Corporation St.

Lyn, Carrs Lane is before the bus stops, Albert St. was opposite Bull St. I would think the building with the spire was somewhere near where the new courts are now.I could be completely wrong though.

I wonder why there are spires on churches?

I was born in hospital but spent my first 5 years in Green Lane, Handsworth.
If you have any photo's of a good looking liitle kid with either a push along steel wheelbarrow, or in pedal car or on a tricycle, then it must be me.
But why do churches have spires?

Signman, despite plentiful opportunities "The Heavens" have never proven themselves to exist (I could stop here) above the normal height of a church building.

I think churches had towers to hang their bells in, and as I suppose flat roof technology was not very good back then they built spires on them to keep the rain out.
