just been going through this tread and I realise Phil was referring to the original Villa Tavern here is the photo he meant,also a pic of the original beer tokens that was issued to the staff of the time.

Yes thats the one, I thought I had taken a copy when you put it up before, but apparently not. so with your permission I will take one now.

Phil, you don't need my permission mate that is what I think a photo is for us all to share, after all what is the point in taking a photo if you don't want anybody is see it?.

Phil and Mike - Lots to look at here.
Philip Nutting looks as if a shoe maker was in the family but in 1911 was at 22 and a 1/2 Templefield Street as a Carter {Carter meaning, I haven't looked up yet} but the address, at the bottom with his signature is correct.
Will look more later as need to stop and get down to Sainsbury's.
So the girl in the doorway is possibly the 17yr old Cecily.

hi all, i guess this doesnt really belong here but im not sure where it should go, but it relates to pubs, there was at least two pubs in gem street in the 1950s, if anyone has photos i would love to have a copy, also the fire station at the end of gem street, sorry not sure where to put requests

Carters of old certificates usual imply a person with a delivery vechicle eg horse and cart or dray, milk cart, later lorry, i have that sort of stuff in my family tree my grandmother was fined for speeding in Corporation Street with a horse and cart

It was often called "furious driving" when it came to court

I meant to look up Phillip in the directories , but it was a bit late and it then slipped my mind. It looks like at that time he was also listed as a coal dealer. Carter/coal dealer seem to be almost interchangeable. Presumably they used the carts for both coal and other goods on hire .

In 1900 17 & 18 Templefield St was a dairy run by Mrs E. Philpott. Phillip not listed
1901-08* Phillip Nutting cooper, 17 & 18 Templefield St
1910 Address and Phillip not listed
1912 Phillip Nutting coal dealer, 17 Templefield st
1913-15 Phillip Nutting cooper, 17 Templefield st
1921 No listing. No 17 is sokit between a plater and a tool maker

So it would look like, - with all Mikes hard work - that the photo must be 1911 as Philip Nutting was in 17-18 Templefield Street on dates before and after that.
It sort of looks like Philip Nutting was only in 22 and a 1/2 Templefield Street for that one year as Mike found another beer retailer there in 1910 and a different beer retailer in 1912.
He must have been in the two properties, on the street in 1911 'cause he wouldn't have left 17-18 and then gone back to 17-18 again.
Yes Phil, I would also love to know what the other notices said, in the window.
The things he did would all fit to-gether, I think Carter/coal dealer/cooper He just didn't seem to have the beer retailer place for very long, if just the one year.
Would you all agree with this and put the picture of Holder's Ales &Stout as 1911.

A few more Holders pubs I have found for you, can I be so cheeky as to ask what your interest in Sir John Holder is? Was he a distant relative, are you a Brummie (as I note you say next time I pay a visit). So where do you hail from, it's alright I'm just naturally nosey. By the way did you know that Sir Johns Road in Selly Oak Birmingham was named after the man himself.
