Mike that has been the story for generations with some of the big breweries. They certainly didn't get a big as they did by being kind to their staff band customers.

But Ember isn't a brewery now, is it. At least when the breweries had their own pubs and brewed beer they had some knowledge of the industry. A large majority of pubs now are owned by people like Ember.

I would argue with that SB. Mitchell & butlers are not a brewery group. They own no breweries , as can be seen from their website at http://www.mbplc.com/aboutus/. They are just a collection of "brands " of restaurants, run by a few dodgy accountants and "managers" at head office, who, as i said previously, j
know bugger all about anything other than screwing their customers for as much as they can get. their main interest is the food side, and the beerr is just a sideline now.

But a lot of the pubs in the groups were M and B pubs some are just changed around. There has been a lot of name changes. When I started work in our pub I worked for Mitchells and Butlers, Then it changed to Bass Mitchells and Butlers at another time it was Bass Charrington etc etc M& b brewed Carling Lager as we understood things now Carling is brewed in Burton by Coors (whoooooo).
Names change all of the time, I remember when most of Brums pubs were either Ansells or M&B then things changed to Allied breweries and Bass. These days I think there is too much emphasis on theme pubs. One thing is sure apart from the independent sector the days of the old British pub are fading away. (only my opinion of course).

I wouldn't argue with anything you haev said in the last post. All I would argue with is that M& B was any real connection with brewing beer, other than having it delivered to their restaurants/pubs, or has anyone in the organization that actually knows anything about brewing, or cares a toss.

And closed it to sell off the land.
As to the effect of the Beer orders: this just enabled money men to demolish the system and , in the name of "competition" make a mint from it -and to hell with the customers. A similar "competition" matter lead to the ridiculous mess on the railways, which resulted in increased money from the government being necessary to enable the rail companies to "compete", and take most of the subsidy out in dividends and bonuses. Once an accountant, always a crook.

As in all other situations Mike money means only one thing "Power".

This is not Birmingham, but Reading, but a beautifully relevant miss-typing (or perhaps sabotage from a sympathetic typist) in a planning application to get rid of a historic pub (from page 18 of http://documents.reading.gov.uk/AnitePublicDocs/00284240.pdf ) has just been brought to my attention (marked in red by me):

The Granby is vacant, precisely because it was unsuccessful financially and it was
not possible to finds a public house operator prepared to buy the property and ruin it
as a public house, despite extensive marketing for a prolonged period. Thus the
applicants are uncertain that it was viable as a public house;

No more need be said

It seems clear that the names live on, but in name only.
It happened with cars and it has happened with beer, even my beloved Brew XI went away then back came as dishwater.
