As far as I can tell you, back to 1903 at least The Rainbow has always been the name of the pub that stands at the corner of Adderley Street. As to the question of was there another pub there before the present one was built I am unsure but I will try to find out.

Further information, the pub was marked on the 1889 map as The Rainbow Inn.

It was named the Rainbow in 1845,. The 1841 Pigot's directory does not have a street list, but does list the Rainbow , High St Bordesley (no number), which is presumably the same. The 1839 directory does not seem to mention a Rainbow or a Minsher (the landlord in 1841).

Thanks Phil and Mike, the reason I asked is on the corner of the building above the door is a statue in relief of what looks like a Ram. I wondered if this was anything to do with a former name maybe not.

Yes it certainly is a rampant goat. I have no idea why, unless it was the logo of some long gone brewery, it's certainly not a logo that Atkinson's ever used as far as I am aware and I thought that the Rainbow was always one of their houses until they sold out.

Thanks Phil and Mike, it just attracted my attention. Maybe the place was used for Devil worship it's not too far from the Blues ground.

I'm still looking into this, for no other reason that I hate being beaten by anything. I can tell you one extra fact and that is the carving is of a Goat Salient and not Rampant as I first thought. The other thing is I wonder if it had anything to do with Rainbow Goats and the pub was called after them and not the phenomena that appears in the sky after a rain shower. After all it would be something that the drovers could relate to when herding their livestock down Deritend to market.

Would this be a good place to start listing all Birmingham pubs that we know are open.
If anyone wants to put it somewhere else please do so and we'll kick it off.

I suggest we name the pubs on this thread whilst maintaining a separate locked thread that lists all the pubs we name here.

Si Senor SB,
Por favor, permitir me aclarar en ingles....

On this thread we name nice old pubs that are still open.
On another thread, not very far away, I will maintain a list of these pubs.
The list will show all the pub names listed in a single alphabetically sorted list.
The list will be locked and kept up to date.

Glossary:
Alphabetically : relating to an alphabet.
Glossary : an alphabetical list of words relating to a specific subject, text, or dialect, with explanations; a brief dictionary.
List : a number of connected items or names written or printed consecutively, typically one below the other.
Locked : fasten or secure (something) with a lock.
Maintain : cause or enable (a condition or situation) to continue.
Open : admitting customers or visitors; available for business.
Pubs : an establishment for the sale of beer and other drinks, and sometimes also food, to be consumed on the premises.
Thread : a long, thin strand of cotton, nylon, or other fibres used in sewing or weaving.

Volty
Many restaurants now serve beer and other drinks, and sometimes food .(Though luckily those, like Macdonalds, that don't serve edible food do not serve beer.
In your alphabetical list is the word "The" to be included alphabetically? tghis sometimes causes confusion. In Kellys (or at least the 1956 one) Royal oak is alphabetically listed without the "The", whereas The British Oak included it.
