I'm not a hundred per cent sure of Alex's first position as I didn't use it then, but I think it must have been more or less at position No 1 on the map. I know it ended up in position 2 (Winkle's photo) at the back of the Crown because I used it quite a lot then.

Thanks for the full frontal Winkle, No SB I'm not going to rephrase that one either, but it has only added to my confusion.

There must be two Alex's.

Volty

I would imagine that not long after the Dudley Street photo was taken that the pie stand had to move because of the building of the Ringway and the new (60's) Bull Ring Centre.

I have google walked it and I think position one is unrecognisable with the Alex site having an ugly "modern" building on it and everything over the road, including a couple of streets, being built over with more modern crap. I used to eat in the Taj Mahal quite often, it looks like it may have been built on the spot the photo was taken from.
The second position is still intact although the "Specialist" shop has been knocked down. http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ll=5...,300.11,,0,3.29

Well, I'm glad that's been sorted. I never knew much about as I was mostly bladdered by the time we got here...But mention of a 'specialist' shop puts me on the corner of Dudley Street and a 'specialist' cinema...you know, the one John goes to when he's up from Brighton....

There is some confusion here.
The 2nd photo winkle posted is in Claybrook Street it shows my old firm SIGN SPECIALISTS and JAMESONS timber merchants which was next door.
The pie van is facing Hurst Street.
No 2 in mikes map is the original position, don't think it was ever at position 1.

John

Then perhaps it moved more than once as the photo I posted is definitely Dudley St because you can see Old Meeting Street heading off uphill toward the Station St - Worcester St junction. And Alex's was at the back of the Crown on Station St in the mid 60's without a doubt or else I used to be drunker than I thought when I came out of the Crown back then.

Yes Phil, that's where I remember it, behind the Crown, used it a lot when I'd had a few, I used to buy 3 pies at a time 2 steak/kidney and 1 chicken/mushroom, after I'd eaten them I was ready to start boozing all over again.

It took me a while to find out where I left this thread off, but I soon discovered we were making out way down Pershore St. Well as we progress down the street we pass by Smithfield Passage, Ladywell Walk, Upper Dean Street and Marl Lane, I have no photo of Mark lane perhaps some one might help me with one?

Now having reached Bromsgrove Street, we can have a look both ways as we turn right and head up toward Hurst Street.

Nothing on Mark Lane, but this shot of Moat Row from Bromsgrove Street is a good 'un...as is the shot of Ladywell Walk circa 1953...

That corner looks like it is ready to be demolished again.

oops! On closer inspection I see it wasn't entirely demolished in the first place.
