Moat Row was a bit of a mystery to me so I started comparing the Google map view with a 1902 map. I know the garbage tip covers quite an area but I never realised how many roads were either built over or incorporated in it.
I assume that the roads that still run through it were eventually closed off for security reasons.
The old map shows a meat market and abattoir along with a horse repository on the site.

Hope you don't mind Volty, but this may help to orientate your points...I probably stole it off MikeJee anyway...

Whilst we are here, has anyone any photos of Lease Lane, top of map off Bell Lane by Fish Market?

Getting back on track after a short break we turn right out of Bromsgrove Street at The Australian Bar into Hurst St. As we pass the site of the back to backs we can also see the Hippodrome Theatre, before passing the Empire Fish Bar the building still stands today. Now on the one side of us we have The Locarno Ballroom over the road from La Dolce Vita Nightclub. In we now come to Smallbrook Ringway where once stood the Empire Theatre when it was just Smallbrook St.

Now we have the stretch of Hill St between Smallbrook St & Station Street. Starting with St Jude's Church that managed to hang on for many years in a modernised Birmingham but was finally squeezed out a few years back. Next we have the corner of Hinkley St just after it was bombed by our EU partners during the last unpleasantness with them. Next is a photo of Alex's Pie Stand behind the Crown public house on the same corner. Then we have the public underground mens toilets outside The Crown, known to the Gay Community as the Golden Slipper and finally in this set of images the opposite corner of Hill St - Station St.

We are now at that section of Hill Street between Station St and Navigation St. First of all taking a quick glance of the stretch of road in front of us, we then take a look at the rear of the Futurist Cinema fro the modern day version of Queens Drive. Then after passing by the Grapes Public House on the corner of Severn Street we come to the junction of John Bright Street. Our last image to this section is the corner of Navigation Street and John Bright Street the home of Chetwyn's mens clothes shop which I am sure that we all know the rooms above were the Whisky A Go Go night club.

I remember Chetwnds it was a great clothes shop, and the music shop I think was George clay.

Yes I occasionally shopped at Chetwyns, but I think the most I ever bought from there was a shirt. They were a little too expensive for me in those days. I relied more on M & J down Ladypool Rd and Nelson House at the top of Albert St.

I have memories of Chetwyns starting to sell musical instruments at one time, but when I have spoken about this elsewhere no one else seemed to remember it.

There was a music shop either next door or very closebye, but I don't remember Chetwyns selling musical stuff.

I swear I have a vivid memory of a drum kit and guitars in the window of Chetwyns, perhaps it was just a window display then.

I can't be sure Phil to be fair, it's over forty years since I was in Chetwyns. I was working at the Albany at the time
and needed decent clothes, as you say expensive though.
