John

From somewhere in the back of my mind a little voice is telling me that Telamite were manufacturers of brake & clutch linings. I don't know if this memory comes from many years in the transport and haulage game or if I retain it from when I worked at J.A.Ryley on Newtown Row as a lad.

You are right Phil, as soon as you said brake linings it came to me.

Signman, Phil,

I thought batteries, so I looked them up and found this ....

"Tungstone makes most of its trade sales of batteries through
Telamite Ltd., a manufacturer of brake and clutch linings at Bentham,
Yorkshire, with depots in various parts of the country and a considerable
business as a factor."

John

Was this delightful building that I am told was converted from an old railway carriage still around in our day. I don't remember it. But as it was only just up the road from you in Bullock St I thought you might remember it.

I just thought as it was only a couple of streets up from Cromwell St you might have passed it by at some time. I certainly don't remember it, but the same as yourself I didn't have much cause to be in Bullock St.

John

You must remember this, or was this after your time. The fire was in 1968.

Phil I have doubts about your fire. In the background I am sure is Central Fire Station. If so the fire in question I think is when the old Halfords went up. Thus this would be Aston, some of the Halls of residence of the uni are on the site now.

Hi Phil,
That was the Harris and Sheldon fire in Stafford Street, the street was virtually empty by then.

SB, it ran from Dale End /Coleshill Street junction to the Central fire station at Lancaster Circus.
The Halfords fire was on the other side of the fire station in Corporation St.

What John says is quite true, I remember both fires. They were quite handy for the Central Fire Station. This was the Halfords Fire taken from the tower of Central Fire Station.

What is bugging me chaps, in the first fire picture. The white tower of the station can clearly be seen, it is quite unique in Brum anyway. That fire is on the right hand side of the station, and so is Corporation Street.

If you look at this map you will see a red 4 near the centre, that is Lancaster Place where the fire station stands. Its now called Lancaster Circus and the road layout has changed. But you can see Stafford street running from there down to Coleshill St / Dale End.

SB,
These two photos may enlighten you.
The first one is taken from Coleshill St.( on the right )and Dale End( on the left) junction, the fire station tower is behind the bus.
My place of work was the last buildings on the left just before the hoardings at Ryder St. corner.
The 2nd photo is as it is now.
