No Phil, I don't prefer to live in a Police state but when we have places in our own city where decent people (including the Police) are not safe something needs to be done. What do we do, Give people ASBO's, some louts actually get these on purpose and compete to see how many they can get.

Torture, it's the way forward. Vote for me.
I would like to live in a police State, they wouldn't have to be armed but at least they could be less apolgetic.

Police are armed in lots of countries that aren't police states, Portugal and Spain for instance.

Not me I've seen the mess they make if things when they are unarmed, arming them would be asking for trouble. I wouldn't trust some of them with a pea shooter.

A very good point. The general standard would have to be raised before they could be given guns.
I remember when the cops at BHX were first armed, one of them shot his colleague in the foot.

I am off to break into something and it isn't illegal, though it has been known to precede a few things that were.

In answer to the straw poll, i think i am against arming all the police. But i do definitely think it is basically wrong that if they kill someone who is waving a gun around and being a general menace that they should afterwards be subjected to the enquiries and general interference that seems to occur. If someone draws a gun and threatens someone else it is their fault if they get hurt. This should apply whether the gun is real or imitation and it should make no difference if the perpetrator is a crazy solicitor with influential friends . The fuss recently in that case by those relatives really got up my nose.

if we were not to arm our police. I think it's certainly time that the most severe sentences were handed down to unauthorized people caught with weapons. Such as certain deportation for non British passport holders. Giving such people bail is beyond me.
Also if anyone is caught in a criminal situation or draws a gun on police or the general public they deserve to be shot. These situations are now happening too frequently. These violent thugs should know if they go out armed on a criminal mission, they may not come back. They have no regard for anyone else caught up in what they do. SB
