A bit warmer today

evening/morning all, i see the white stuff is still around, we are now in autum yet still getting days of 35c, pain really, autum is the best time in melbourne usually with a steady 25c in the day, still cant complain we had two nights of rain, so gardens got a good soak. We had a few dry years - melb was down to just 6 mths water supply a while ago - so the labour party built a desal plant, it was almost finished when we had heaps of rain, so our dams are i guess 3/4 full - the conservaties have seized on this, a waste of money building the plant - the flip side was do nothing and if the rain had not came they would have been slugged for not doing anything - a real dammed if you do - dammed if you dont (pardon the pun)

Something I've always wondered, is salt a by product of a desalinisation plant?

dont know but if it is - they dont keep it, as the "waste" is pumped back into the sea, which the local say is so strong it kills the fish - i dont know if its true, government says its not, but u know what they are like

the delsal plan produces 150 billion litres of fresh water from 280 billion litrs of sea water, and pumps back to sea 280 billion ltrs of saline - the outfall is 1.2 miles from shore. the plant requires 90 - 120 MW of power to run it, so it has a wind farm to assist to try and make it carbon neutral.

all i can tell you is it is in standby mode, due to the floods we had last year and the dams being over 65% for the first time i think in the last 20 years
