Hi John, the book is called History of Signboards by Jacob Larwood and John Camden Hotten with one hundred illustrations in Fac simile. It is an 11th edition 1900.
The book is available to download free at http://books.google.com/books?id=_tkmAAA...epage&q&f=false .including the rather nice cover picture titled "A man loaded with mischief of matrimony" and lots of info on signs (including pub signs) and their origin

Thank you Denise and Mike, have just ploughed through all pages (550) ,not my cup of tea I'm afraid more of a history lesson on general subjects than signs, still an interesting book there's about 50 copies and reprints available on Amazon.
