Going back to what Volty said yesterday. The best car accessory was a starting handle, most of our early lorries had one and in the winter they were a requirement with the older lorries. No matter how good your battery was you always had to use the handle on frosty mornings. A couple of slow turns just to turn things over before would often be enough before you tried the starter.
I remember one winter when they had just finished the traffic island at Holloway Head and the fuel froze on one of our lorries. The traffic backed up for miles luckily enough our yard was only about a mile away then so we were able to tow it away pretty sharpish.
