as some of you know i was involved in trying to save this 17th century pub from demolition as the planned HS2 was in its way...even if we had succeded it would have been for nothing...bet the council wont be too bothered about this..

Sad shame Lyn, but as you say the Council will probably be chuffed it's gone. nobody is going to cry over this one.

My random thoughts. I can't find a coherent argument either way so I thought I would just vent my ideas.
We live in a unique period where there are many old buildings that give us a taste of history and there are many of us that have a sense of history.
I doubt that future generations will care as much as we do now.
Many of these historic buildings are in private ownership and the cost of preserving them is high.
Who do we think is supposed to pay for their preservation?
Not withstanding the empty pub spontaneous ignition syndrome many old pubs are still standing, should we visit them more frequently in the hope of providing financial support for their preservation?
Does the profitability of a building ensure its future existence?
Do pubs really deserve more attention than other less popular but more important records of architectural history?

good thoughts there volty...all i know is if i could save every building over the age of 100 years i would,..no harm in dreaming...not really many left now to save...far as i know the fox and grapes and the land is owned by bcc...

Why do some of us want to save certain buildings?
Some because they are asthetically pleasing.
Some because we have fond memories of them.
Some because of rarity.
Some due to value. etc etc etc.
Then along come the younger generation who want them knocked down to have a new MacDonalds.
Some even want them knocked down to build new housing. How selfish.

carl chinns article that was in the mail the other saturday...fair play to him but in reality i cant see the fox and grapes being retained....anything that gets in the way of HS2 will be destroyed...

Actually SB, I think what the younger generation really want is for Macdonalds to be delivered via their iPads. The building could then be demolished to provide skate-parks. Mind you, at least they probably wouldn't want them to be bloody football grounds

Never had McDonalds ,the law states that burgers can contain up to 2 % feaces by law.,and nothing is done about it .
