Mainly For Brummies But All Are Welcome To Join In The Birmingham Fun & Chat |

I know on occasion we make a good read but would any new members reading this, who wish to be a part of this forum, please log-in and make themselves known to the rest of us.
As an administrator of this forum it often falls to me to "administrate" the members list.
In the first instance, a prospective members details are checked against reliable sources to see if they are known spammers.
Genuine applicants are admitted to the New Member group where they enjoy limited posting and viewing abilities. This is to protect our threads from abuse.
As soon as a new member has made at least one qualifying post they are moved to the full member group where little or no restriction is in place on their activities.
All this requires effort on the part of the administration and the applicant.
It surprises me therefore that so many new members never even bother to log-in, let alone make a single post.
One of the founding principles of this forum is to have an active membership and not allow the members list to become bloated with non posters.
Our rules state that members who fail to post within 28 days of joining will be deleted and whilst this rule isn't rigidly applied, there does come a time when such members are deleted. I prefer to delay such action even further when non posting members have logged in recently but still didn't have anything to say.

I get a number of bogus people joining our site every day. We vet them all though and we can weed out the spammers etc

Jo Spammers are people who send Spam. Unwanted email. Some of which can cause untold damage to your computer and even destroy a forum such as this. This is why you have a Spam box on you email. Just delete anything which appears in it. To be fair Volty is the person to tell you more he is our expert on such matters.

It's not just email.
Forum members can post text, web links and pictures into any thread they choose.
We have to restrict that privelege to bona fide parties who have an interest in enjoying the forum for it's intended purpose.
For this reason we have a two stage acceptance of member applications and two levels of membership.
There are people who see forums as ready made free advertising hoardings. They can populate your forum with all sorts of garbage in a matter of minutes, some of it is computer generated, as are many membership applications. They get paid by the click so if anyone clicks on their links, even if they are disguised as news reports, etc, it is money into their bank account. Some join just to advertise their own services or product.
The damage to the forum is always repairable and Xobor secures us against malware and spyware getting on the site. It is the destination address of the web links that represent the danger to a Users PC.
Never click on the links in a newish members post without considering the source. Hovering over a link should reveal the destination address in the bottom left corner of your browser. If it doesn't reveal or the reveal doesn't look right then don't click on it. Report it to admin. I will delete any link I find that isn't what it seems, no matter who posted it, especially those with Eastern European addresses.
