What a God awful piece of design. Square boxes stacked up and covered in Circles. When I first saw the plans for this abortion of a buiding I thought it looked like a foreign legion fort covered in barbed wire. Now I have seen the finished article I hope I will be around to see it demolished, but I doubt I will be so lucky.

hated it from the mock up plans 3 years ago..still do..i can see this monstrosity from the lozells road...

I am sure the interior of the library and the contents will be good, but why spend millions on an awful rubbish design. only my view of course.

same here astwood i was always at the library doing family research and looking for old photos so we have probably passed each other a few times...
i cant understand why someone did not suggest designing the facade to be more in keeping with baskerville house and the hall of memory and then the inside as it has been done with the modern approach...sort of the old meets the new...one can only hope that they maintain the excalators and lifts better than they did in the old library..that the flat roof does not leak and that the metal work does not start to rust in 5 years time...only time will tell but i find it a most imposing building..almost scary and i just dont like it i also hope that the elderly have been considered and not just the under 25s and students..those escalators look very steep to me...another good link here

I like the roof terrace where one can take books outside, get them wet in the rain, drop them in the snow or just chuck them off the roof. Brilliant idea.
There is so much airy spaciousness to this building, it must be like a massive chimney in the event of a fire, no fire breaks, no walls or doors yet litterd with flammable materials, Brilliant Idea.
Big building filled with space instead of books. Brilliant Idea.

I would be grateful if someone can explain the agenda surrounding Birminghams new library. It is no secret that I hate the design. At the front at the moment is what can only be described as a wild flower mess. There is apparently a statue to be made in Bronze of two young Asian Ladies with their children this is supposedly to signify a "Family" ethic.
Could not a local "Married" family be found for this. Not a good advertisement for modern Morals.
Now Our So called Library of Birmingham has been opened today by the girl Malala who was brought to this country for life saving treatment after being shot. I am genuinely sorry that this girl was shot. I am also pleased for the girl that she has been saved. Many of our armed forces personnel have been shot and not given such hero status. Would it have been so awful if one of these fine brave servicemen could have opened this building.
This was supposed to be The Library of Birmingham.
But the opening of this new library at a cost of £188 Million quid, and I suspect more,and I understand the largest library in Europe according to the news people. I would have thought that this building would have been opened by a member of the Royal Family. Or at least a local person with popular connections.
This is a Fine city with fine traditions, including making weapons for civil war etc etc. It is also to be remembered that this Library is in the Fine City of BIRMINGHAM in the Centre of England in The BRITISH ISLES. not ASIA or the Far East.
