I have just looked at the photo of the old Chestnuts. Was it a men only pub?

I only know one bloke who used to use the chestnuts, his name was Gary Hart
From what I heard, you had to be a man to go in the bar, and preferably a big one :-)

No Dennis, it was the best pub in Birmingham for all genders.
What makes you ask?

I was a boy when I set foot in the Chestnuts bar. Even the hard men in there were pussies trading on their invented reps.
I visited hundreds of pubs before I was 20, I have records, and I never met a better bunch of folks anywhere than I knew in the Nuts. As good, maybe, but never better.

I played league pool from 1978 and through the 80's and 90's and Ive been in some pretty rough pubs, but because we were all there for the same end there was rarely any trouble. I think the worst events were in some of the Chelmsley pubs

The nuts never had a pool table. There was a nice old table football in the bar.

Hi Dennis, your question about the Chestnut Tree and women. Yes there were plenty. We had three rooms two requiring three staff and one requiring two staff. Plus Two of us full time staff to float around and Mr and Mrs Green. In the picture you see a load of blokes. One of them was the boss's dad and some of them were mates of some of the staff. We had just had an incredibly busy evening and as usual when required some of our customers (who had worked for us) and some friends helped us out.
To give you an idea Christmas 1974 we took over £10,000. now bearing in mind a pint was around 4 shillings (20p) and that we were open far less hours than todays pubs that was a damn busy pub. We was in fact the second busiest M&B pub in the Midlands that year. That was confirmed by M&B.
Yes we had women , most were young lady's with family's, most of those were conscripted to lunchtime shifts, with a college across the road, an industrial estate just down the road and being in the middle of a large housing estate we were busy every lunchtime too.
As for being a rough pub whoever told you that didn't know what he was talking about. Yes we had the odd occasion most of which was from none regulars and easily sorted out.
Most of the pubs around us was a bit on the rough side. ie: The cabin, The Lea Tavern, The Meadway, The Mackadown, etc etc.
I knew Gary Hart and he was telling you a right load of rubbish, we had the best bunch of customers in the world.
That was by the way only one of many photo's that I had taken in the Nuts. I will sort out more. SB

The only way is up

He was one of my drivers ... so I can believe what you say
He bought his kids into the office one day and they were larking around. Gary said to them this is Jon. One of them looked up at me and said "My Dad says you're a bar*****"

It's a good job I was an understanding boss :-)

82 posts and only 9 photo's.
The library might be a better bet than this thread.
