It does make you wander what rubbish we have been eating for all these years
I started out with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

Sorry but in my opinion the blame lies with the supermarkets who control the price of food in this country and tell the suppliers how much they will be paid. The suppliers have to cut corners and fiddle just to survive, I think before this ends we will discover that it runs throughout the food industry.
I think it's all Mikejee's fault.

Thank you for the vote of confidence folks !

You don't have to go to china. I can't see why anyone would want to eat legs that have been pulled off frogs while they are alive. Anyway, i did taste them once (before I knew how they were harvested) and all i could taste was garlic & butter. Much better a good baked potato with lots of butter .
The range of things put into processed food (I am talking about legally) is much more restricted because of regulations . I remember a friend of mine many (over 30) years ago who worked for a time at a Walls sausage factory, and he never ate Walls sausages.
I remember someone who worked for the food division at Cadbury's just after they took over Typhoo . Apparently in the old firm pre-takeover the teabags could be divided into 4 grades:
1. Special ones made with very high quality tea
2.Ones made from ordinary grade tea
3. Cheap economy ones made from tea dust and old tea
4 Catering tea bags, made from floor sweepings etc
I will add that the last grade disappeared immediately after the takeover and catering bags were after that the third grade.
The Meet the Midwife program mentioned that chalk was added during and immediately after the war to fill out and whiten bread, so you are probably aware of that. But you may not be aware that this happened with a great deal of bread in the nineteenth century, but was banned, only to reappear in the 1940s..

What always amazed me was just how little meat there was in sausage I think a jewish person could have eaten a sausage without suffering Karet prior to the advent of there having to be a certain amount of meat in sausages.
I think there has always had to be a certain amount of "meat" in sausages, though it was much lower for catering sausages. However what the rules defined as "meat" would not agree with what most people would class as meat.

We just had an indian takeaway menu come through the door. It offers meat curry. This takes me back.
I may be wrong, but as I remember, the choices in the 70s were Chicken, Chicken BOB, Prawn and Meat.
If you wanted Beef you had to buy a Vesta. If you wanted Lamb you had to go somewhere posh.
I thought the general description of "meat" was long outlawed as it doesn't mean anything.

I don't think it is outlawed, though I would be put off by it. After all they regularly advertise Vegetable curry- no description of which veg.

Do vegetables have to meet the same traceability and storage standards as beef, etc?
Or can they just throw in any old vegetation?

I would think "any old vegetation", as long as it was not a listed carcinogen or poison, and did not make you ill
