Does he mean a hundred new officers on the beat, or does he mean a hundred new officers whizzing around in panda cars chasing teen racers when they are told not to. I would pay for a hundred new officers that were dealing with crime on the streets willingly.

I would think it most likely that he considers it necessary so as to increase the size of his own office and employ a few "assistants" at £80,000 or so a year . you do have to have managers to answer Cameron's questions and fill in forms, those at the sharp end are of secondary importance

Don't forget the Police Force all over the country has been depleted thanks to this governments viscious cuts.
Also not to be forgotten is the enourmous power that the new office of Police and Crime Commisioner carries with the job. The PCC for the West Midlands was put forward by the Labour Party. As we have a Labour City Council in Birmingham. The PCC will of course have no opposition from that council. Also the Labour council will not be checked on Law and order issues by the PCC, who by the way appoints his own deputy.
How dare this PCC ask for more Council Tax for extra Police when WE ARE STILL paying for the ones that are being retired early.

As I read it, he wants to employ civilians to do the paperwork so that 100 of the police officers we already have can leave the station.
I thought this was already the case. I remember thinking what a good idea it was when it was suggested years ago.

If it means that police officers can arrest someone, deliver them to the station for processing and get straight back on the street then it will be worth the money.

I have seen the odd police program on TV and the thing that is most noticeable is the time the coppers, usually two of them, spend in the shop while the suspect is processed.
In one instance I saw, they arrested a known abusive drunk, at about 9am, in a town centre and didn't get back on the street until late afternoon. There are a whole load of things wrong with that situation and anything that keep coppers out on duty gets my vote.

Talking of voting, I though we were supposed to vote for the Commissioner?
What happened? I don't know who this guy is or where he came from. I wasn't offered the chance to vote and wouldn't have known who to vote for anyway as there was no publicity or campaigning.
