A Solihull fraudster who raked in £15 million who was jailed for 17 years was told at a proceeds of crime hearing the other day to repay £1 million within 6 months or serve a further 3 years inside.

Do the courts really believe that this is all he has left out of £15 million and that he has squandered the rest on fast living and gambling? Surely his house, contents, cars, jewelry and assetts are worth more than £1 million anyway.
things like this bloody annoy me...ive no problem with this man serving 17 years for his crimes if the punishment fits the crime but im comparing this sentence against what murderers..rapists and child abusers get and to me it sucks..the courts obviously think this type of crime against the government deserves a longer sentence that the taking of someones life etc....the law in this country is an ass..always has been and always will be...i rest my case..

Good point, well put, Madam Barrister.
Now have a bit of a lie down until you feel calmer.

Or his testicles, so he can't produce any more in the same mold.
If he claims he hasn't any left he should be made bankrupt, with a minimum period before release of 39 years, together with his family if he has passed on money to them.

As I understand it he didn't earn any of the money concerned but simply reclaimed it all from the government when it wasn't due to him.
You have to wonder at how the VAT man can continually make payments without checking the validity of the claim.
Don't forget that VAT is only 20% or less of the actual claimed expenditure.
I made a slight error on a VAT return once and it came back for correction. The VAT I was handing over was correct but I entered the wrong figure in one of the other boxes.

Volty
The VAT fraud used was very simple and it is used by a lot of professional fraudsters. It is only one of many VAT frauds that are used every day that must cost Customs & Excise millions daily but they hardly ever seem to scratch the surface with their investigation team. You are rights is seems that making sure that you don't claim 20p to much back on a fuel invoice is more important to them.
