Murder of Police officers

Is it not time for the weak hearted minority to wake up and make our government get tough on violent crime and just for once back the police.
Crime in this country is escalating year on year.
Its time our Government did their job and made society safe again.

As I have stated before on this forum I am not in favour of Capital Punishment and I don't think we should ever return to such a place in history. Yes Murder is barbaric but so is taking someones life in revenge. A whole life sentence is what murderers should get, with no possibilty of parole.

My real objection to capital punishment is not the fact of putting some creep to death, but the possibility of hanging an innocent person. I don't suppose we will ever know just how many of those we executed over the years were in fact not guilty of the crime, but just look at the numbers of those who were found guilty of what were once capital crimes who have later been found innocent and released since the abolishment of hanging.

Then we also have to deal with things like the Craig & Bentley case. At one time in this country there was no murder of a policeman ever that wasn't punished by the execution of someone. Was it a mindset like this that led to the execution Derek Bentley when his accomplice murdered PC Miles whilst Bentley was in custody?

Nowhere in my previous post did I mention capital punishment phil. Treat criminals hard is what I was saying. No one who has served time in jail for a serious crime should be left with any desire to return.

No but as posts similar to this have turned into a debate on capital punishment on other forums, I was just getting my point of view in first.

While I understand not wanting to execute anyone who may be innocent, ( I obviously wouldnt want it to happen to me ).
I also would rather empathise with the victims of violent crimes and the friends and relatives who have to cope with the aftermath.

I sincereley hope anyone disgreeing with me is never in this position. In my opinion ANYONE caught carrying a Gun or a knife should be treated as though they have used it.
Everytime I see a very old Man or Woman pictured in a hospital bed Battered almost to death I think of our spineless Government who lack the backbone to deal with the vermin who are ready and willing to show how hard they are.

I have no qualms about whole life imprisonment, or even hard labour on bread and water if you like. I could stand for the return of the birch & the cat for particularly heinous murders because all these things can be recovered from, but if they make a mistake death is final and can't be recovered from.

I'm with SB on this one, and seeing as there is not much chance of biblical justice in our country then it is surely well past time we made the punishment fit the crime by whatever means remain.
It isn't acceptable that taking a life at random can carry a penalty so attractive that even a life sentence to it isn't sufficient deterrent.

I will once again complain that many more innocent lives are taken by murder than were ever taken by undeserved miscarriages of justice.

I doubt you would feel the same sitting in a cell waiting to hang for a murder you were innocent of, because 12 of your peers thought different and they just probably wanted to get off home for their dinner.

Better that than a lifetime of fear because our streets aren't safe to walk.
Fear of the death penalty is very selfish and over righteous, in my opinion.

I'm not scared of the death penalty and I have no fear of it, if it was only used in cut & dried circumstance where there was no shadow of a doubt then I would have no objections. My objection is when there is doubt it is left to a jury where 10 out of 12 of then decide if another human being is going to have their life ended on their say so.
