A Mixed Grill, where did all the Steak bars go. I remember having a great steak in the Sandiego Steak bar in the Swan at Yardley in the Sixties. I was only a teenager I thought it was just about the smartest restaurant in the world. SB

SB

All the steak bars and the like were replaced by curry houses and Chinese restaurants in the 60's. I think in Birmingham back then if you wanted something a little better than Wimpeys, Lyons's or Fleur De Lys. Then it had to be the Burlington or The Exchange, failing that one one of the hotels. There was for a good while a shortage of English restaurants of any kind in Birmingham centre.

Not that I have anything against Wimpey and Lyons's. Lyons on New street was my favourite port of call after a night at the Odeon with my latest girlfriend.

I was only walking down this street on Thursday, obviously no longer there, but imagine these living conditions, 1 standpipe and 1 toilet
between everyone.
Anyone like to take a guess where .

Well John knowing part of your history I would say Cromwell St Nechells. The trouble is as we both know all these places we were expected to live in looked the same.

John

Isn't that the idea keep us guessing as long as you can. I would have, mind you I would have cheated if it went on too long and looked through my collection as I'm sure I have that photo somewhere.

I've just looked and yes I do, I thought I recognised it.

Now what about this, I have had this photo for a long time. I have no location or name for it. I keep having a look at it. To be very honest it is very familiar and I think I should know it but I just can't bring it to mind. So if anybody has a clue, please help.

Phil, my observations, cinema or theatre canopy at right with with the letters HIP (hippodrome ?) and next to it an open space with posts and rail in front, turning area or garage entrance on the left, even though it's black and white the lower half of the bus does not look as if it could be blue, more of a maroon colour.
Are you sure it's in Birmingham, West Midlands Police covered a big area.

It came from a West Midland Police Museum website at this link,

http://www.westmidlandspolicemuseum.co.uk/vehiclephotos.htm

I have managed to identify some of the locations, some are impossible to do so, but this one intrigued me because it looked so familiar. I have to say that the locations may not have been restricted to Birmingham but some obviously are.
