My Granddad was Head Shunter at Saltly Gasworks. He was also an ambulance man. One day one of his men was hit by a wagon. He climbed under and cut the mans leg off with his penknife. You couldn't call Paramedics in 1914. I still have his medal.

He was a hell of a guy. I didn't know him but I do know than on a busy day Hundreds of wagons would bring coal into Saltley and go out loaded with coke. He faced danger daily. Loads of men were killed at work in those days. His mates accident was in 1914.

As i said i have railway records of my ancestors but they only give the basic emloyment records
Is there any where i can find out more?

I don't think that falls under Genealogy. More like wishful thinking.
There would have to be something in writing in the first place, then it would have to be kept safe for much longer than necessary at the time.
The railways have changed so much it's a wonder any original documentation survived.

Astwood, where did you get their employment documents from?

I have a few GWR staff papers from the 1930s, they mention lots of employees for a variety of reasons and there also some similar from LNER, but I haven't seen any from as far back as the 1800s, have a look on eBay.

If his name is not too common, then it might be worth looking in the newspaper archive, just in case I subscribe to it, so could do it if you give me his name. chances are there will be nothing, but worth looking to see

I'm amazed that there are railway employment records on Ancestry, how did they get hold of them?
And more importantly for me, do they have brewery and other trades on record?

Looks like it is time for me to re-subscribe to Ancestry.

No brewery as far as I know. The railway ones come from the National archives.
A large number of Brewery records and other such things were in the Birmingham library up to a few years ago, as the brewery history archives kept them there. Then, inj 2010, when the library decided it should concentrate on a "fancy" building and giving space to google, more than keeping books and records they were dispersed. a lot went to Oxford Brookes university, and some to other places.
