So the England team start flying out to India today. Even though the place is insanitary and falling down. They deserve all they get. SB

Something should be done to stop all these type of events going to third world countries or countries with bad human rights records.
I don't want to hear the usual crap spouted that sport has got nothing to do with politics. I agree that it hasn't, it's got more to do with who can make the most money out of it.

Good that it provides jobs for the poor in India and Boy are the poor in India poor but they like everyone else must provide the goods.
Denise
OK it provides some short time work for a tiny fraction of the poor Indian people, but do you really think that any of them will gain anything from from these games. Myself I think they will be worse off.
Have you seen the makeshift camps the temporary workers are living in outside the complex. The government, organisers or whoever it in in charge couldn't even be bothered to provide temporary accommodation for the workers.

Fact the top 100 earners in India take 25% of the Countries wealth.
Fact There are more people in poverty in India than the 24 poorest African countries Combined.
I know lets hold an international games competition to raise everyone's spirits.

I have not seen the pictures but I can imagine it..check out the news before I go to bed
They should never have been given the games, they just haven't got the technology or the skilled labour force to carry out this sort of event,
they've been working on it for 7 YEARS!
Still when it's all over another shanty town will arise from the buildings, when the people move in.
Sadly you are right I think John

I also fear you are right, and the only slight gain will be by the few hundred people who get to move into the accommodation once the athletes have left.

From what i hear about the standard of construction at the games , I don't think i'd want to enter the buildings, never mind live in them. Of course, i could think of a few footballers, politicians and religious leaders I would happily send there.

What I don't understand is, I have seen some really good Indian Tradesmen in the building trade especially Sikhs. I know they work different ways to us, but their standard of work is excellent. So who is to blame? Mind you all the good tradesmen are probably here and who can blame them.

I don't think it's the standard of work so much as the corner cutting budget and cheap shoddy materials.

Its as I said, an exercise in making money for a few. The sport comes second. It's no different in this country. Whenever it's anything to do with sport, the money will be found even when it runs two and three times over budget. Try finding the money for a hospital and its not so easy.

How about we all get together and try and build a new pub, bet you a thousand quid it will be squashed.
