A more descriptive title might get the message across.
It can't be said too many times, if you answer the phone and don't know the caller JUST HANG UP.
None of us are an emergency service.
In this country most people feel obliged to their telephone and allow intolerable intrusions into their lives. I have news for those people, the phone is for making calls, not receiving them.
This might sound impractical but modern telephone equipment can filter your incoming calls to the point where nobody can speak to you unless you have put their number on an approved list.
Phone numbers are not secret or private, most of them are numbered between 001 0001 to 998 9999, any computer can dial hundreds of numbers per minute. One of them will be yours.
People, and particularly the older generations, need to be continually assured that it is perfectly acceptable to either not answer or to hang up abruptly. it's your telephone, it belongs to you, don't feel obliged to be polite or listen to the caller, JUST HANG UP.

I never answer the house phone only the wife does that { I wouldnt dare } anyone wanting me has to call my mobile, I have had the same number for years. I don't answer witheld calls, If I answer someone I don't want to speak to again I save the number and name them as Ignore. So if they call again, I am told to Ignore so I do. Works for me>

It's called taking control.
We are of the generation that saw widespread GPO phone installation.
Deep down we have a reverence for the technology that today's scammers can take advantage of.
For many years I have treated the telephone with utter contempt, it only brings bad news or other peoples problems.
If it wasn't for broadband I wouldn't even have a line.
Most times now I don't even know where my cellphone is, unless it is ringing or it starts beeping for a recharge which is about once every two weeks.
