In some ways it's even better than a census, which is why the records of those still living are blanked out.

the only trouble is volty that the 39 is far from up to date...they need to get a move on with that because i have 4 rellies who have died whos names are still blacked out..2 of them died over 20 years ago so dont believe all you see

I haven't come across any definite evidence of that yet myself but as it would be a mammoth task to update the record, I can't say I'm surprised.
That said, I'm not looking at the record to inform the record but to inform myself, so anything I discover or prove is a bonus.
Also, you can't be sure that the person who is blanked out is actually the person who you think they are, unless the black bar is distorted, in which case a bit of extra information is revealed.

One of the things I have really, really found the 1939 register useful for is confirming the precise birth dates of people born in the later part of the 1800s, assuming they got it right in 1939, even the census never did that.
And it shows ageing family members still living together, thereby confirming who is still living and that earlier records were probably correct in a number of ways.

It also shows the married surname of women married during or even sometime after 1939 by the simple expedient of crossing out their maiden names and writing in their new surname.
There is a good bit of early evidences available but after the 1911 census reliable information is a bit thin, so I find the 1939 worth the admission price alone, for now.

I am paying Ancestry and it is on their system.
Perhaps if you are viewing a free version it is not being updated.
