I would say it isn't so sad. They seem to have enjoyed life, despite the hardships, and neither one of them was left alone for long.
There are worse endings.

For one partner to die shortly after the other is not uncommon. It is possibly connected to the fact that those who are happy (on average) live longer than those that are sad, so when the source of happiness is no longer there, then they are more likely to die
