Sorry Sheldon boy but I don't do tribute bands no matter how good they are

Oh No not tribute bands they didn't exist then. what I am talking about is inserting a few notes of Sunshine of your love into one of their own pieces As A Tribute. A salute if you like to the importance of the track.

Steepletone and others, are making a whole range of stand alone record players, some with a look of the fifties about them.
My personal favourite is this one.... Steepletone SRP05TT Stand Alone 3 Speed Record Player

My brothers used to buy me records before I left school so cant remember the first one I bought myself but I would think it was Elvis. I've still got loads of 45s and LPs but dont think any of them would play very well no matter how good the record player was.

I don't think they ever played well but they were as good as you were going to get. The resurgence in vinyl is based on a perception that it gives a richer and warmer sound, well so do valves but that's not the best reason to go back to them.
The reason for me getting a player is the nostalgia, and if my record collection of ex jukebox 45s from the 70s sounds a little scratchy, then it will be no worse than they sounded on my 80s HiFi.

I would like to still have my old stand alone record player. It was a McMichael cabinet with hinged top cover, a speaker grille on the front and a recessed plate for controls on the side.
It might have had the Garrard deck in it when I was given it, I don't remember, but it certainly didn't have any audio output and I had to wire it into the phono input of our old Muphy wireless.
After a while I got hold of a three valve phono amp and fitted it into the cabinet along with an oval speaker.
It got thrown out in later years, when I wasn't looking, because scaremongers were going on about valves causing fires. They never did, it was always the power supply.
My next stand alone player was an old Tannoy wooden cased valve radio and record player unit from the Chestnut Tree, originally supplied by the Birmingham Telephone Company. This also mysteriously vanished from the loft.

I'm a firm believer, I'm afraid, that Vinyl is a better sound to CD and certainly tapes.
Thats just for me though ... it's seems a deeper tone to me. We have a huge collection of CD's and a large collection of vinyls from the 70's and 80's, and when given the chance I like to listen to the vinyls.

I have a technics system from the 80's which I have kept because it has a good sound, and I also have a digital deck where I can record vinyls through the PC onto CD. It's a long winded thing, you have to record at the wrong speed (45 on a 33.3 record) and then slow it down on the PC to record to disk.

i think its old age creeping on, the old valve radios did I think give that warmer feel, but it could be that that the old analogue stuff gave a wider range, like not chopping the wave with compression, not my field, but i find digital sound to be cold, clear as a bell just cold, i don't know if that's what they mean with the term definition or what, but I find even with the scratchy sound of my ex jukebox singles i still like it, really i think I'm regressing to my teenage years, hey Volty I did pick up a cassette to MP3 converter in hong kong so I have my much loved interview with del shannon on the computer, I am still playing back my old radio shows to see what else I can find, I know somewhere there is a roy orbison, paul anka, marcia hines , should many others its just a matter of finding them, volty you will love this story, I was at 1026 (am) Casanova (the voice of Bali) in Dempasar back in the 80s, out back we had an old tin shed which apart from two walls and a roof was open to the elements, inside this huge valve I guess maybe 2 foot high and glowing bright red, its monsoon time pouring with rain and Im standing next to the engineer passing him tools, frighten the life out of me, still all good fun

That valve must have shifted a few watts.
I wonder what the radiation was like?
