There were a lot of fancy glasses in a room next to the Chestnuts cellar. I wonder if they were ever removed or are they buried under the housing estate?

The glasses that Volty speaks of, unless they were replaced were tall stem glasses with coloured bases in boxes of 12. They were in the pub for many years and they were pulled out for weddings and various other functions in the early days for the toast etc. At one time there was about 200 of them. The room they were kept in next to the cellar was The Compressor Room. The compressor originally held in there was for the delivery of our tank mild. At the time we had 180 gallon tanks in our cellar (5 barrels each). The Tanker wagons pulled up to the pub. A pipe was connected from the lorry to a tank in our cellar an an Airline was connected from our compressor to a tank on the lorry. The Mild Ale was then blown from the lorry into one of our tanks. In those day we sold about six tanks of mild a week. That is the equivalent of around 30 Barrels a week. The bitter (Brew XI ) at the time was delivered in Hogsheads and put on to trolley thrawls so that they could be moved around and were stooped on these. (Tilted). Carling Black Label Lager was sold from 18 gallon Kilderkins.

Lyn this exactly how The Chestnut Tree was as built. On the frontage was The Willows Lounge then the Good Cheer Cellars with the Chestnuts bar on the right. The pub I think I am correct was opened in1964/5 The first Licencee was Wally Mills followed by Jim Noake and then Gordon Green and his wife Diana Green. I am afraid I can't remember the Licencees that followed as in my estimation the pub was not kept to the very high standard that we were all accustomed to.

Unfortunately Lyn this is not the case. This room (picture no.2) was The Rowan Tree this was opened as a smoke room later to be upgraded to a lounge so that the prices could be raised when at the time we were held by retail price maintenance. (we couldn't put any prices up without government permission).
The lounge that had it's name changed To The Green room In honour of Diana Green Wife of Gordon Green was the Willows Lounge. One of the nicest little pub lounges in Brum.

This was The Rowan Tree Room laid out for a function. It was probably a dinner in the summer for the OAPs, they had one at Christmas too. In the summer about 100 of them were taken out on a coach trip, brought back for a quality dinner, a show was put on for them and they were given money for a drink.

Perhaps SB will tell us why, prior to 2002, the Willows was always known as The Blue Room?

Elementary my dear Voltson
The carpet, Curtains and upholstery of the Willows was all blue.
The Blue room also had another special feature. The Bar and Backfitting much to the annoyance of the cleaners was covered in copper, this of course had to be polished everyday.
