It may be just that, because I do not have kids, I was not aware of it, but today I was talking to a friend from Yorkshire, who told me that "because of health & safety" children there are not allowed to have proper ties, but have to use clip on ones , and that if they try and go in with proper ties they are told to remove them. Is that just the offshoot of a particularly pedantic and stupid headmaster, or does it happen elsewhere also?
I can see that it would ensure a tidy tie being worn or no tie at all, so no messy knots or ties at half mast. As to health and safety, it isn't the tie that's the problem it is the source of the danger. The danger when I was at school was from lathes and bunsen burners. We tucked our ties into our shirts. Saying the tie is the problem is like saying your legs are the problem when climbing a broken ladder.
