#1 by Sheldonboy , Wed Oct 02, 2013 7:25 am

Mind you the only cars that can do over 15 mph are usually stolen.

It's about time and as usual we are years behind the rest of the world.
According to my car trip computer my average speed around Birmingham is only 15mph, so in an ideal world a reduced limit wouldn't have any effect. Due to traffic conditions thirty is rarely achievable.
Unfortunately only law abiding drivers will be doing twenty, the remaining ignoramuses will speed with impunity, just as they do now, because there are no police to stop them.

Or are accompanied by police escorts (because they either contain dangerous criminals or one of the the royal family's multitudinous offspring)

If it does become law those who only do their motoring around b'rum could buy a bike and still get around as fast, think of the money they would save.

i thought i would add a bit to this, when I moved to OZ in 1973 the speed limit on open roads in the northern territory was - I quote the signs "your conscience is your speed limit"
a few years ago they cut it back to 120 or 150 in places, but the government recently have said they are going to change it back so that there is no limit on these designated roads

I don't drive anymore but i can see there logic.A lot of drivers cant keep to just 30 mph, so will they take any more notice of a 20 mph limit,we will have to wait and see.[Quite Wrong]

It's here.
I've seen it outside schools for quite a while. According to the BCC website it is in a lot of places.

"The speed limit on residential roads has changed to 20mph in all or part of the wards of Aston, Bordesley Green, Brandwood, Hodge Hill, Ladywood, Moseley and Kings Heath, Nechells, South Yardley, Sparkbrook, Springfield and Washwood Heath.
Between 30th August and 30th September 2016, we consulted on the next area, Central South West Birmingham, which covers all or parts of Edgbaston, Harborne, Selly Oak and Bournville wards. Although the consultation has closed, you can still view the details on the Be Heard website."

I still don't see how it is being enforced, there weren't any speed cameras in the streets I know of, it would be impractical anyway to put up so many cameras, and there are even fewer police now than when this thread was started three and a half years ago.

If you drive around many of the main roads in our area you will be lucky to get up to 20 mph anyway.

It's all academic.
There's many a noisy racing car goes up our road at all times of day and night, but without any police they speed with impunity.

The Police are having enough trouble catching gangs of kids on pushbikes at the moment.
