Minister speaks against HS2

#1 by Sheldonboy , Fri Aug 23, 2013 9:08 pm

Alastair Darling has a change of mind. As a lifelong supporter of railways in Britain I still think this line is unwarranted.

I have just lost all interest in HS2.
2026 and 2033 might as well be dates for the end of the world as far as I care.
I don't want to go back to Leeds now, let alone in twenty years time.

But the cost is as irrelevant as the accuracy of the estimate if i will be spread out over such a long time.

As some of you may know, for the past year I have been meeting with HS2 bosses along with other members of the community...my task along with Mike Hodder who is Birmingham City's archeaologist was to put a case forward on the heritage side of things to try to save the 17th century Fox and Grapes pub Park st/Freeman st which is surrounded by medieval archeaology and also the nearby Eagle and Tunne pub...anything standing in the way of this line will be swept aside...people are going to lose their homes under a compulsory purchase order..streets and roads will disappear and a whole lot more..i could go on forever about this but after being told many times that there was a good chance of the Fox and Grapes and the Eagle and Tun being incorporated into the scheme of the the new station it has now been decided to demolish the Fox and Grapes and take the roof off the Eagle and Tun as you will read in the below proposals...I'm gutted but at least I tried to do something about losing yet more of Birmingham's history instead of just moaning about it...posting the lastest proposals just in case any of you have got the time to read it and actually make sense of it...its a total waste of time and money and trust me will cause more trouble than it's worth.

Lyn all credit to you for your work with the HS2 project, I am always in favour of improvements especially with the railways. But I have been involved with and observed many large projects and it's usually fair to say that once these things get to the public consultation stage, most of the plan is already decided.
We have seen before. Money talks and Money is power.
I have been reading a great deal about HS2 and I am convinced that this will disrupt and inconvenience more people than it will ever benefit. At the current cost estimate it will never be financially viable. Even if it pulls in maximum returns it will still cost millions to maintain and run. This is exactly why the monster Doctor Beeching did away with so many countryside lifelines forty years ago and those trains did actually stop to serve local people.

History repeating itself it happens everytime. Money pulls the punches. The Peasants always have to put up with the results no differernt to Medieval days.http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/loc...sidents-5778653

totally agree with you SB..I think that what's upset and angered me more is the fact that I was hoodwinked but I half guessed I was on a hiding to nothing from the start...they knew all along that the Fox and Grapes would be demolished as it sits more or less where platform 6 is intended..and how good of them to retain the Eagle and Tun minus its roof[Frowning]..it's been said that if us little people don't stand up and be counted we will get nowhere but in this case the little people just don't count at all..there is another meeting next week but I won't be going as I will probably blow my stack and get arrested...it could be that there will be another excavation of the Fox and Grapes site before any work starts (just like they did with the new library site under which the Winfield Brass co. was )so I will be keeping in touch with Mike Hodder about that as I maybe able to get some pics of it...
