I found this forum after looking online for old photos of Ladypool Rd and have just signed up!
I was born in Henley St Sparkbrook and have many fond memories of the area.
The Balsall Heath/Sparkbrook thread caught my eye and the photos posted by Phil and Fred brought back some memories.
I used to have a Saturday job (about 1960) at the 'Maypole Dairy' grocers shop in Ladypool Rd.
I haven't managed to find any photos of the shop but I would love to see some if anybody has any.
Looking forward to reading member's comments and posting some myself.

Hello Clipper,
Welcome to the forum.
I just looked up Maypole Dairies and I am amazed at how many branches there were around the country. I had never heard of them.
Hopefully someone will find you a photo.

The history of the firm is at http://www.historywebsite.co.uk/articles...e/maypole01.htm. No picture of the ladypool branch though

Thanks for the welcome and the info about Maypole Dairies.
Volty- I also didn't realise how many branches they had at their peak.
As well as Ladypool Rd, they had a shop in Sparkhill on the Stratford Rd. I was sent there a few times to help out if they were busy.
It's amazing how times have changed. I remember the bacon slicing machine in the back room. Slicing bacon was almost a full time job for the fella that worked it.
I often had to 'skin' cheeses- removing a waxy sort of skin from the outside of a lump of cheese I could just about carry.
The Ladypool Rd shop was on the left hand side as you walked up from Highgate Rd. I think it was just past the junction of Colville Rd

Clipper, I think the vertical sign at the far right of this picture says Maypole, is this the place?
It's not a very good image so I will keep looking.

Volty,
Thanks very much for your time and effort.
The sign certainly looks like it says 'Maypole' but the shop was a lot further up Ladypool Rd than Woolworths. That Maypole sign would be roughly where 'Peacocks' was if I remember correctly.
The shop was a very traditional looking old fashioned grocer's shop and had sun blinds that the shop manager would pull down to protect the goods in the window from the sun.
Little things keep coming back to me!
Many thanks

Hopefully, there's a few more tucked away somewhere!
I'll have to start a new thread in the appropriate topic area when another memory surfaces.
