less than a fortnight after the train crash in France there is a similar tragedy in Spain.

The driver was certainly exceeding the speed limit for that bend. He admits that he was doing at least twice the 50mph limit. It's a terrible loss of life for what trying to make up 5 minutes of lost time.

i would have scarcely thought that it would be necessary for a train driver who had been properly trained on a route to consult a map of the route. As I understand, in the uk at least, they have to know every little detail of a route before they are properly signed off
