Yes Sad news again I always liked him even from the start on the Tonight news programme with Cliff Michelmore, Whilst on the subject everybody knows that an Alan Whicker was a "nicker" a pound in cockney rhyming slang but where did nicker come from?

I thought it was from when a pound was a solid silver coin. People used to cut a tiny nick in the coin before parting with it and this way they could save up a small quantity of silver.

I haven't a clue myself and I have never heard a reasonable explanation, Volty yours sounds reasonable and I understand that the clipping of silver coins was commonplace when the silver content was quite high and this is why we had milled edges on them in later years. Though I'm not sure there ever was a silver pound coin.
