http://m.bbc.co.uk/news/health-22335511 Speaking as someone who has had shingles in the face and came close to losing an eye, I can only say this must be a great step forward. It is the most painful thing I have ever known. I literally sat in the dark crying for a week. I couldn't watch the television or have the light on. It made myeyes so sore. 16 years later I still occasionally feel the sensations from it. Although I know you can't catch Shingles from someone who has it I would still be too scared to go near anyone who has.
Someone i worked with had a very bad attack also. He went through agony, and still had a slight twitch on on eside of his face when the pain was over. He also had to have a small operation to block a tear duct in one eye, as he seemed to be continually crying . As you say SB, a big advance. I would question why not people a bit younger though. I just make it !!

So far as I know Phil you can only get Shingles if you have had Chicken pox its the same virus. sorry to disappoint you Phil but I had wicked Measles as a kid. I still got shingles. You can't catch shingles from someone with Shingles but you can catch Chicken pox from someone with Shingles. Although I know Shingles cant be caught from someone with Shingles, it scares me so much I wouldn't go near just in case Phil.
I'm no medical expert as I suffered very few childhood illnesses. I have never suffered from any illness in my life and I never had a bad day until they told me I was in danger of dying. Until then I hadn't seen a doctor since the age of 21 when I had a medical for my HGV licence so that was 37 years doctor free.
I knew it was one of those spotty things that turned to shingles, so if I have had chicken pox can I now catch Shingles? I know I never caught any of the childhood things of the kids when they were young and I'm sure they had all the usual things.
As i gather volty, the bug is already there from the chicken pox, hiding in the body and then brought out by some stimulous. Its like cold sores, in fact i think the two viruses are related.
