I agree about the concrete monstrosity, but I'm not a fan of the new one either. Though there places always look better from the inside. I would have thought that Birmingham would have learnt it's lesson by now. I's no good trying to lead the way architecturally when no matter what we do all the other cities led by that cesspit down south just can't wait to ridicule us.

Just look how many of them criticised the Bull Ring development in the 60's, but if you took a good look around those Cities how many of them copied elements of it?

The thing is will the new public square entail us losing more of the old Chamberlain Square, look what we lost last time half the fountain and most of the monuments and statues.

like many things it's what's inside that really counts - in this situation - the books.
If the old one was getting full up, fair enough, although maybe they could have another section found or built somewhere for non books, (computers, the audio and video library etc etc), rather than spend yet more council tax money.
Throw away society - that's the problem.. instead of mend and make do (and put money where there is real need) - they rip down and buy new :(
I always found the current one fine - not bothered about how it looks - there are other buildings around to look at. (Although can't say looking at buildings is a favourite thing to do).

I see your point SB, but if it had been next to a large colllege and a university, then it would have been full of students with no space left for others. Both the college and university would have taken the opportunity to reduce their own facilities for study (while at the same time probably increasing the budget for college administration) . The library is for all members of the community and colleges should provide their own facilities for study unless the study specifically concerns those resources only available at the library.
