in my humble opinion this project costing 190 million pounds should never have been undertaken if the city couldnt afford it...beggars belief that they are now needing handouts...

Some of the cock ups made by some of our. Councillors are legendary, between them they have done more damage than Heir Hitler could have dreamed of.

Are they cock ups or are there too many brown envelopes floating about?

totally agree

the 'old' one was absolutely fine (certainly last time I visited it - it had everything)

what was lacking is how to get people to use it probably

Unfortunaly Marion I have to disagree, the old Library is a grey concrete toilet. One reason for this awful mess is that it was never finished. Either through lack of money or interest it wasn't completed. Now to add insult to injury it has to go because its not big enough and its full up. Plus the fact that the buidings that will go in its place are already planned and passed. SB

well as a constant user of the old library most know my thoughts on it..smelly..dark..lifts constantly breaking down..only a third of excalators ever working and on the 6th floor which i used mostly it would not be unusual to see buckets scattered around to catch the drips from the leaking roof... i for one will shed no tears when this building goes and some idiots only fought to slap a grade listing on it...

I agree about the concrete monstrosity, but I'm not a fan of the new one either. Though there places always look better from the inside. I would have thought that Birmingham would have learnt it's lesson by now. I's no good trying to lead the way architecturally when no matter what we do all the other cities led by that cesspit down south just can't wait to ridicule us.

Just look how many of them criticised the Bull Ring development in the 60's, but if you took a good look around those Cities how many of them copied elements of it?

I have to agree Phil in respect of the New Library (to be opened in September 13) is an awful sight. An absolutely foul and abysmal design. As I have said many times before it looks like a Foreign Legion fort covered in barbed wire.
It's also in the wrong place squeezed between the Repertory Theatre and the wonderful Baskerville House and dwarfing both.
I wonder about the reasons for moving the library so fast considering the new buildings to replace the old library and Chaberlain Square are already planned and the plans are passed. A new public square will appear where Chamberlain Square is at the moment.

The thing is will the new public square entail us losing more of the old Chamberlain Square, look what we lost last time half the fountain and most of the monuments and statues.

I dont think the square is going to be smaller as much as the buildings being higher, so the sunshine factor may be a bit diminished.

like many things it's what's inside that really counts - in this situation - the books.
If the old one was getting full up, fair enough, although maybe they could have another section found or built somewhere for non books, (computers, the audio and video library etc etc), rather than spend yet more council tax money.
Throw away society - that's the problem.. instead of mend and make do (and put money where there is real need) - they rip down and buy new :(
I always found the current one fine - not bothered about how it looks - there are other buildings around to look at. (Although can't say looking at buildings is a favourite thing to do).

the problem is Marion the Old library was a disgusting old toilet. Because the Agenda has always been to replace it, it has never been looked after. when planning this new monstrocity there was talk of putting it down on the East side. What better place for a reference library that next to a large college and a University. Instead it has been squeezed into totally the wrong site. (in my humble opinion.)

I see your point SB, but if it had been next to a large colllege and a university, then it would have been full of students with no space left for others. Both the college and university would have taken the opportunity to reduce their own facilities for study (while at the same time probably increasing the budget for college administration) . The library is for all members of the community and colleges should provide their own facilities for study unless the study specifically concerns those resources only available at the library.
